Choosing the Right Yoga Equipment for Beginners   by Yogaaccessories

If you are just getting started in yoga, you have probably read a few books, watched a few videos and become very excited at the prospect of getting started in this ancient combination of exercise and meditation. While it is quite possible to perform your Yoga Exercises with nothing more than a bare floor, you will find that having the right equipment will not only make the exercises more comfortable to do, but will encourage you to remain steadfast in your convictions.
The first thing that any newcomer to yoga needs to understand is that you do not have to buy the most expensive, brand name yoga accessories and equipment. In many cases you will find that you are simply going to end up paying far more than you need to, just because someone’s name is on the box. These people allow their names and likenesses to be used as product endorsements in return for a percentage of the total sales.
At the same time if you believe in shopping this way, you are just as likely to end up buying far more equipment than you really need. This is a very common problem for most newcomers to any sport or form of exercise. One thing to keep in mind is that there is a lot of very flashy looking yoga equipment on the market, but being flashy does not necessarily meant that it is the best equipment for you to get started on your yoga regimen with.
So what type of equipment do your really need to get started with your yoga exercises? The first thing you need to invest in is a yoga mat. The ideal mat is one that is going to provide you with a non-slip surface. The importance of this will become obvious as you learn the more complicated poses and exercises. If your feet and hands are going to slip out from underneath you while you are exercising, there is a high potential for injuries to occur.
Unlike many types of exercise mats, the typical yoga mat is thick enough to provide sufficient padding for you to be comfortable without being so soft that you cannot transition smoothly from one pose to the next. Because you are going to be in some very unusual positions that stretch your body and limbs to the limit, the surface of your mat needs to be somewhat sticky to help keep your hands and feet firmly in place.
Another item of yoga equipment you may want to invest in is a set of yoga blocks. These are highly recommended for those who are new to yoga. When you are new to yoga, you are going to be stretching muscles that you are not used to exercising and this can lead to strains and pains that can be very discouraging. Yoga blocks are used to help relieve some of the strain on many of the different muscle groups.
Often made from foam, yoga blocks can be used to provide extra support and height for certain exercises. Using them can add an extra level of safety to each of the poses and exercises you are likely to be performing. When you use them under your hips, heels or hands they can add the extra stability and grounding you need in order to be able to achieve full extension and maximum results. These blocks come in different sizes so that you can pick the size that best fits your body and needs.
You have probably seen the big vinyl exercise balls that are being used in Pilates and many other forms of exercise and physical therapy. These balls are being used in yoga to help with a large variety of yoga exercises and poses to help gain full extension and more effective poses. The one thing to keep in mind is that you need to buy a ball that is matched to your height as one that is too small or too large can cause more harm than it does good.
There are many other pieces of yoga equipment and accessories that can help to enhance your exercise regimen. Choose your equipment very carefully and remember that you do not have to buy the latest brand names in order to get high quality equipment. At YOGA Accessories, we carry a full line of top quality yoga exercise equipment and accessories at prices that are very affordable.
